Basket Whip

A whip variation danced with two hands. Around counts 3&4–5 the follower is turned at the post into a wrapped ("basket") position facing away from the leader, with both hands held low, and is unwound on 5–6 before the anchor. The timing is plain whip timing.

The follower's path is straight forward and straight back with no turn, and the leader dances the same footwork as a basic whip.¹ The leader's hand rests at the follower's hip and the free hand stays off the body.² Brian B describes the lead as "creating a basket with my right arm that she comes into", and points out that the follower stays anchored at the far end until the leader moves across.³

Naming

Also called the locked whip. Robert Royston: "some places in the country call this a basket whip. Locked whip, basket whip, same thing."⁴
